Escaping The 9 to 5 Job – Remote Work

Welcome to 2024!

I am hopeful this year will be better than the last few. It can’t get any worse, can it?

Wait, I didn’t ask that and didn’t answer it either.

With a new year, now is the time to start a new you! Or a new business!

I have done writing challenges in the past, but instead of a set time frame, like 30 days, my goal is to write 500 words daily.

What goals do you have?

So, yes, I have written about goal setting in the past, but let’s recap.

Take a goal you have, like writing more, and make it more specific and easy to accomplish. Using the example of writing for five minutes a day.

This makes the goal you have easy to accomplish. It’s also one of the reasons I’m writing this post. The website needs more content, and I’m trying to give you enough information this month to start your website!

Check out the Building Your Freedom section of this website for more.

So, as you can see, breaking down your larger goals (wiring more) into a smaller bite-sized piece or easier goals (writing for five minutes) allows you to create something you know you can achieve!

Goals That I Haveto do list on wall

If you aren’t aware, I never make New Year’s Resolutions. This is mainly because numerous studies (such as this one) show they fail 80% of the time!

80% of the time!

That’s crazy!

So, instead, let’s work on setting goals that we can achieve and make our lives better. Leave the resolutions for the other 80% of people out there.

You might have similar goals, but here are some of mine, in no particular order:

  • Helping others
  • Set my own schedule
  • Living for experiences
  • Build my own business
  • Stop and reflect (meditation)
  • Spending time with family, friends
  • Read more (10 minutes a day, that is)
  • Walking up when I want (not waking up to an alarm clock)
  • Health and fitness (working out, hiking, camping, and being outdoors)
  • Learning every day (web design, business, SEO, how different cultures work, and life)

I think I’ll stop here. There is a funny thing with goals and things you want to do with your life.

Sometimes, you don’t have the ability. Other times, you realize that you do and need to make the most of it.

For example, I have loved the idea of working remotely. It has been an interest of mine for as long as I can remember. But, previously being a first responder, I couldn’t see that being feasible.

Fast forward to today, and guess what? I’m building my own business and am finally working on that goal.

And I don’t think I need to talk about remote work, since many companies have migrated to that. Which is interesting to me, so many people love it but businesses are wanting employees back “in house.” It’ll be interesting to see how all this pans out.

Reason For Working Remotely

Ever since my first trip abroad, I have wanted to go back. I enjoyed seeing other cultures and learning from others.

Having the ability to work remotely would be amazing and life-changing. This is one reason I started this blog, and I wanted to see if I could write and help others start their side businesses.

Ultimately escaping from the 9-5 job.

Not only would working remotely be amazing, but it would also be a freeing experience.

For example, during my last road trip, I set up in my car (or the best mobile workstation) and wrote a few blog posts.

During this time, I found that the only downfall was finding a good WiFi signal. That is an awesome “problem” to have.

Working anywhere you have the internet is the ultimate dream for many. In today’s world, that can be anywhere since satellite internet is now a thing, and something I’ve been looking into!

I would love to hear if anyone uses StarLink as I find it fascinating.

Since we are sort of on the topic, my 2020 road trip was during the start of everything shutting down due to COVID.

This made it extremely difficult to go anywhere, much less find any sort of WiFi (and another reason StarLink would be amazing, especially on the road).

If you need the internet to work, you start to get creative about how to get it. If you are on the road (like I often am), you can always try tethering your phone, going to libraries or coffee shops, or just trying to park close to a business with an open internet connection.

And this is also why having a VPN is so important! But that’s for another topic.

Finding Work

I will try and stop rambling and tie this into a business.

Since you, too, might be interested in starting a website or blog, it is important to learn how you can make money while doing so.

As with anything in life, there are a few different approaches.

The main one is becoming an Affiliate for companies.

This is a fun and exciting way to make some extra bucks. It could also be an entire post by itself, and if you are interested, let me know!

Another thing you can do is freelance writing, which I am currently doing.

There are many other things you can look into.

You might be experiencing something common right now. It feels that you don’t have the required experience for remote jobs.

You might be surprised by some things you can do to fix this. Such as taking online classes or starting your BLOG!

Oh wait, that’s what we are already doing.

Stop Thinking and Start Today!

As you can see, there isn’t anything holding you back.

There is light at the end of the tunnel (in this case, becoming location-independent).

You can dream and read about all the cool things others are doing, or you can start today!

To find motivation, focus on the important things in your life, like being with friends and family and earning enough to support yourself.

Looking back at the ” Goals ” list above, you might have many of the things listed (and I’m sure even more). But most of them revolve around building a business and spending time doing something you enjoy every day.

Your situation might be different than mine, and I’m sure it is. But find out what is holding you back so you can start to move forward.

Examples include job security, benefits, relationships, family, children, mortgage, etc.

You might even realize that starting a side gig, like writing, is something you can do in your spare time. Many people, including myself, are doing that right now.

Remeber, whatever approach you take to starting your business will take time. Finding time can be difficult but not impossible. You can do it!

What Are Your Thoughts?man thinking in forest

This post was for you and a reminder for me.

We need to set our path and achieve what we want.

We need to try to stop focusing on the past because we cannot do anything about it.

It’s time that we look towards the future, which is something you can influence.

Reflect on the previous year and determine what you liked and didn’t like. Make adjustments for the remaining time you have to make the most of it.

We tend to focus on things we haven’t been able to do. With COVID, that list is never-ending.

Starting today, try to focus on the positive.

Have you, or do you currently, work remotely?

I would be interested if anyone knows of any jobs or where you have looked for jobs.

Who knows, this might be another place people can throw some information, and we can all learn.

Let me know if there is anything I can help you with regarding getting your website up and running.

The more questions you ask, the more we can all learn.
